
From Wind-Up Tin Toys to AI Companions: The History of Robot Toys

The word robot was first introduced to the world by a Czech playwright, Karel Čapek, who wrote a piece called R.U.R. (Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti), with the English version being Rossum's Universal Robots. Robot comes from the word robota, which means forced labor or drudgery, and in the play there are mechanical beings who are forced to work. That dark backstory aside, the word totally dominated popular culture. The interesting thing, though, is that it only put a name on an idea that had existed for centuries beforehand.
Pre-robot Origins
Al-Jazari's elephant clock (1206): An engineer in the Artuqid court documented a mechanical creation that ran entirely on hydropower. He documented his creation in his book called "The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices." It features a submerged bowl that would slowly fill with water, and at every half hour it triggered a chain of events: a mechanical bird released a ball into a serpent's mouth, the serpent tipped forward, and a mahout figure struck the elephant's head to mark the time. It was absolutely revolutionary for the time because it was basically a programmable machine, six centuries before the word existed.
Karakuri ningyō (1600s-1800s) Wooden mechanical dolls driven by whalebone springs and gears. The most famous one carries a cup of tea to guests, stops when the cup is lifted, waits, then turns and returns when the cup is set back down. The Karakuri matters more than any other item on this list because the tradition never died. It's what fed directly into Japanese clockwork toymaking. This is almost certainly the reason why Japan was the one to create the robot toys and not Germany or America. It produced the first robot toy that dominated the field for 40 years.
Jaquet-Droz's The Writer (1774) A child sized boy who dips a quill, shakes off the excess ink, and writes any text up to 40 characters, following the letters with his eyes. The text is set by rearranging stacks of cams on his back, which functions as the replaceable memory. It still works in Neuchâtel today. This was an incredible invention, and the craftsmanship was unmatched in the early days of clockwork machines.
The First Robot Toys
Lilliput (1938-1940s) This robot toy had a boxy yellow riveted metal box with a twisting key crank and articulated arms. This is usually the one credited as the first robot toy ever made. It's the toy that fueled the iconic robot design with the riveted metal box and analog face. The exact date the toy was created is kind of unsettled because so much of the record from Japanese toymakers of that era is spotty, so collectors argue it's somewhere around the late 1930s.
Atomic Robot Man (1948) A small silver wind up robot, one of the first Japanese robot toys exported to the United States in mass volumes. Funnily enough the toy started being shipped to the US only three years after Hiroshima, which is probably why it got the name. A lot of the time, robot toy makers would name something after whatever the public was scared about, so the toy absorbed the culture around it.
The Wind-up Mechanism One important note: this was the mechanism that almost every single robot toy thrived on for the entire era. You'd wind up the key on its back and it would shuffle forward. When it stopped walking, the child would wind it up again to keep it going. This was the age when the toy was totally powered by the child's own motion and intent. Little did they know in 80 years the toy would actually respond to the child.
The Vintage Golden Age
Radicon Robot (Masudaya, 1957) This was the first radio controlled toy robot ever sold. It moved on command from a handheld transmitter, and at this point radio control was barely found in adult products, let alone toys. Part of Masudaya's Gang of 5, which is one of the most valuable toy sets in all existence, with good examples reaching 5 figures.
Mechanized Robot (Nomura, 1956). Better known as Robby, built in the image of the robot from Forbidden Planet, which was actually made without any licensing, but that was relatively common at the time. It was battery-powered, with pistons under a clear dome and the lights in the head. This is why the friendly barrel shaped robot became the default mental image of a robot for generations.
Mr. Atomic (Yonezawa/Cragstan, 1962): Another dome-headed robot, with a porthole-style design that made it look less like a man in armor and more like an actual machine. It actually sold very poorly, which is another reason why it's one of the most sought-after robot toys in a collector's market. You'll find this pretty common with vintage robot toys: the worse it did commercially back then is actually the biggest indicator of how much it's worth now, since it's so scarce.
Characters and Transformations
2-XL (Mego, 1978) The most crude version of a toy talking robot so far. It ran on 8-track tapes and asked children multiple-choice questions, branching into a different part of the tape depending on which button they pressed. As simple as it was, this is the first toy that held a two-way exchange with a child, and every conversational and educational toy since has been downstream of it.
Transformers (Hasbro/Takara, 1984): Takara, the toy company, already had two existing lines of toys, Diaclone and Microman, which got rebranded and gave the world a whole new kind of robot toy. The concept was that one toy could turn into a totally different toy, and playing with it was how you revealed it. Commercially it is still one of the most successful robot toy lines ever made.
Teddy Ruxpin (Worlds of Wonder, 1985): This was an animatronic bear whose mouth and eyes moved in sync with a cassette in its back. The toy did so well that it actually became the best-selling toy in America for 2 years in a row, and it proved something that tin robots could not. Children will speak to a soft toy the way they speak to a friend, but won't really do the same with a hard plastic or metal one. This is probably why every plush AI toy on the market today is running on this same discovery.
Artificial Life and Programmable Toys
Furby (Tiger Electronics, 1998) Probably the most well-known toy on the list so far, and for good reason. It included motors, lights, and sound sensors, and it would start to speak a gibberish language, but then it would eventually transition to English, so it felt like it was actually learning. It sold roughly 40 million units in three years. Some government workplaces actually banned it because they thought it had a listening device in it, which they thought was the reason why it could learn language. This was the predecessor to the AI toy privacy debate, and it arrived over 20 years early.
Sony AIBO (1999): A robot dog at around $2500 with genuine behavior architecture: it had moods, developed differently depending on how it was treated, and it could not just be commanded like a remote control toy. The first 3000 units sold out in 20 minutes in Japan. Funny but also kind of sad, Sony stopped making AIBO in 2006 and cut off repair support in 2014, and by 2015 owners were actually holding funerals for their units, which is some of the first real evidence of how strongly people can attach to machines that seem alive.
Anki Cozmo (2016) was also a robot toy, but it took the shape of a palm-sized bulldozer, which sounds weird but actually looked relatively cute when you looked at it. This was probably because the animation of its face was made by former Pixar and DreamWorks animators, and it could express its feelings, like frustration when it lost and happiness when it won. It demonstrated that expressiveness, not intelligence, is what makes something feel alive. Unfortunately Anki shut down in 2019, and the assets were bought by Digital Dream Labs, which kept a limited version still alive.
Conversational AI companions
Curio's Lineup (2023-Present): Screen-free, camera-free plush toys built around a voice box, launched with character design and voice work from Grimes, the celebrity music artist, who voices the rocket ship character Grok. This was truly the pioneer of AI toys, and we aren't just saying that because we're writing the blog itself. When a child shakes the toy, presses a button, or asks it anything, it gets a response generated for that specific question rather than pulled from a phrase bank or a cassette. This is truly the first time that you could have a genuinely unique, real conversation with a toy.
Conclusion
Every toy in this list, going all the way back to the elephant clock, was doing the same basic trick: a fixed sequence dressed up to look spontaneous. Even Jaquet-Droz's Writer could only do what it was programmed to do. The 2-XL could only branch off to answers that had already been recorded ahead of time. Even Furby's learning wasn't real, it was just pre-programmed behavior.

That's what makes AI toys truly revolutionary: they're using today's technology to make play something totally different. 300 years of clever engineers building machines that had the appearance of thinking, but now toys actually think.
