Setting Up Your Curio AI Toy: A Step-by-Step First Day Guide
By Curio Team
So you've spent hours scrolling through pages of comparisons, reviews, and blogs to finally land on the perfect toy, only to realize the toy probably requires some setup. All of Curio's toys use the same setup and configuration, so here's exactly how to get your Gabbo, Grem, Poppy, Lingo, or any other Curio AI toy up and running.
What You’ll Need
- Your Curio plush
- Voice Box™ 2
- Smartphone
- Home Wi-Fi
Note: Shipping takes around 7 days, so if you don't have your toy yet, go ahead and save this blog for later.
Step 1: Download the App
Head to either the Apple Store or the Google Play Store depending on what device you're using, and download the app.
Step 2: Start-up and Bluetooth
Be sure your Voice Box is fully charged before starting the Bluetooth process. Once it's charged, turn it on. The LED should glow solid white, which means it's starting up and searching for a connection.
Open the Curio app and follow the prompts to connect your phone to the toy with Bluetooth. Once the toy is in pairing mode, it will glow blue. Bluetooth is only used during setup and enrollment, and you can turn it off after the toy connects to the internet.
Step 3: Connecting to Wifi
The app will walk you through connecting Wi-Fi for whichever device you're on. This step matters because your AI toy needs to communicate with Curio's servers. The plush works by sending voice transcript data to the LLM, which sends a response back to the toy to be spoken aloud. Without an internet connection, the toy's capabilities are severely limited.
Step 4: LED Lights Meaning
The toy's status is shown through its LED, which is genuinely useful to know during troubleshooting.
- Solid Green — Talking mode is active
- Blinking Blue — Bluetooth pairing mode
- Solid White — Starting up / connecting to the internet
- Blinking Purple — Firmware update in progress
- Pulsing Red — Factory reset starting
- Flashing Red — Factory reset underway
Note: on older Voice Box versions, white can also mean the toy is charging. If you're ever unsure what's going on, check the toy's status in the app.
Step 5: Three Main Areas
Once you're connected, it's good to familiarize yourself with the app's layout and capabilities.
- Voiceboxes: See every toy connected to your account, including battery life and status. Tap "View Toy" for more detail.
- Toy Settings: Start or end activities like songs and games, manage Wi-Fi, check for firmware updates, and set custom prompts. You can add specific topics you want your toy to talk about here as well.
- Transcripts: Probably the most notable feature in our entire lineup. Audio is turned into transcripts, which are sent to our LLM to formulate a response, and those transcripts are stored for up to 90 days before being deleted. The best part is you can delete them yourself at any time, for total privacy.
Step 6: Watch It Grow With Your Child
The best part about an AI toy? It actually gets smarter than it was on day one. This happens through routine software updates delivered over Wi-Fi. You'll know an update is underway by the blinking purple LED, and you can check your toy's current version through the Toy Settings menu in the app. No need to plug anything in, except when the Voice Box itself needs charging, of course.
