How AI Toys Can Help Kids Learn

By Curio Team

Language is arguably one of the most important skills for childhood development and academic success. During the early years of childhood, the brain forms synaptic connections at an unprecedented rate, and these connections are directly fueled by conversation.

Children who experience a rich and diverse language input build a stronger cerebral cortex. This almost always translates to better academic performance later in their lives. So what if there was a way for a child to stay engaged in conversation as much as possible in their early years? AI toys may end up bringing a solution to this.

What the Research Shows: A 2025 Systematic Review

In 2025, a team of researchers led by Aysel Şahin Kızıl from İzmir Bakırçay University, Türkiye, alongside colleagues from the University of Hradec Králové and Cyprus University of Technology, published a systematic review covering how AI chatbots can improve language skills. They searched hundreds of studies and narrowed their selection to 33 using the PRISMA methodology.

The PRISMA Methodology

The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) framework is notorious for being incredibly good at producing high quality, transparent, systematic reviews. They used the PRISMA framework to ensure a bias-minimized reproducible study. The main takeaway is that this study was difficult to put together and has been thoroughly vetted.

Two Primary Benefits

  • Vocabulary: The first clear finding was that children who regularly interacted with the chatbot showed measurable gains in their vocabulary. This is because when speaking conversationally, it forces them to retrieve words and use them in context. Additionally, the AI will use words a child has never heard before and try to use the same word repeatedly to drill comprehension. This supports what researchers already know about language acquisition, language grows the fastest from active, repeated use, and not memorization.
  • Speech: The other dominant skill that emerged was speaking. The conversational nature of AI chatbots pushes the back-and-forth nature of human language. One unique advantage that these AI toys have is the ability to reduce social anxiety around conversation. They offer a low-stakes environment where a child can practice language. This is helpful because children can oftentimes be nervous around teachers or adults.

Four Additional Benefits

  1. Personalized Learning: AI chatbots adjust learning techniques to better assist a child. Whether it's changing the subject to something a child actually wants to learn about, or increasing a language's difficulty level after some improvement, every child gets a learning experience they cannot get from a classroom or a television.
  2. Immediate Feedback: Language develops the fastest when children get immediate conversational feedback. AI toys or chatbots do not get tired and have more availability than a teacher or a parent. They offer constant conversational practice at any time.
  3. Enhanced Willingness to Communicate: Children were shown to speak far more freely and without fear of judgement. Research showed that they talked longer and more openly with an AI than they did with a teacher or adult in the same setting.
  4. Increased Interaction: Screen based learning is a one-way setup. Children learn far less with a screen than they do with a live interaction. AI chatbots require the child to participate along with it and not just watch.

Conclusion and Implications

It's worth noting that all 33 studies used AI technology that was at least 2-4 years old at the time of this writing. Given how rapidly AI has advanced, this actually understates the results. The tools being studied are already less capable than what exists today. Even with those earlier models, AI chatbots produced consistent, measurable language gains across every study reviewed. The question is no longer whether AI chatbots help children develop language skills, but how much stronger those results will become as the technology continues to improve.

Conclusion: Where Does Curio Stand?

The studies reviewed were not conducted with Curio. They were conducted across 33 independent research efforts, by different teams, in different countries, over four years. What they kept finding is exactly what Curio is designed to deliver. That consistency across unrelated research is not something we manufactured. It is just what the evidence shows.
